NIHR’s Committee on Complaints, Monitoring and Follow-up convenes its 21st Regular Meeting

25 Feb 2019

The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR)’s Committee on Complaints, Monitoring and Follow-up convened its 21st regular meeting headed by Ms. Maria Khoury. The meeting was attended by Committee members Mr. Khaled Alshaer and Mrs. Rawdha Alaradi. The Committee reviewed all the complaints received by it during the past period from mid-January to mid-February, amounting to (11) complaints, which varied between the right to health, the right to work, the right to physical and moral integrity and the right to freedom and personal security.

The statistics of the work in the past period were reviewed. They included (34) legal assistance requests, in addition to monitoring (4) cases via the media and social media, taking into consideration that the Committee received (99) calls via the toll-free hotline for receiving complaints during the said period.

The Committee also referred to the proceedings of the NIHR’s meeting with HE Minister of Health, which has been coordinated to discuss the conditions of patients with sickle cell anemia in the Kingdom of Bahrain and the services provided to them, in light of a number of complaints received by the NIHR, which were submitted by some people with the disease.

In the context of the NIHR’s keenness to protect the rights of the individuals, especially the most favored groups, including the elderly, the Committee reviewed a report on the results of the NIHR’s field visit to one of the elderly people who submitted a complaint to the it, where the details of his status were closely examined in preparation for taking the necessary action with the relevant authorities.

It is worth mentioning that the NIHR receives complaints and applications for legal assistance either personally or via the toll-free hotline (80001144), the NIHR’s website (www.nihr.org.bh), or the (NIHR Bahrain) mobile smartphone application.
